“We loved our stay at The Butler’s Retreat! You can’t tell from the pictures just how big it is, it’s such a lovely space and the furnishings are beautiful and in keeping with the rest of the building. Tissington itself is a wonderful little village and there’s plenty to do in the surrounding area. We ate at the Coach and Horses in Fenny Bentley and the Crispin in Great Longstone and both do good food. All in all we would fully recommend staying here!”

“What an amazing ‘little’ gem! The Butler’s Retreat is an absolutely beautiful apartment that exceeded every expectation we had! Sir Richard gave us a thorough explanation of the place upon our arrival; although half of what he was telling us fell almost on deaf ears as we were lost in the beauty of the place! We spent a lot of our stay discussing our take on the history and character of the place, remarking on the architecture of the building and just how beautiful and peaceful the place is. It didn’t take long to ‘join the dots’ with the logic behind apartments’ name!! A Stirling host, a beautiful apartment in a stunning location! The families Tea Room is also high on our list of favourite places we’ve had breakfast! Thank you for being a superb host. We hope to see you again soon for a tour of the halls and in attendance at some of the upcoming events”

“A beautiful location, gorgeous accommodation- spotlessly clean and with lovely little touches. Sir Richard is a great host - friendly, welcoming and eager to share local information & suggestions to make your stay even more perfect. You leave feeling like you've been part of something very special”

“Butlers Retreat is fantastic. The standard of the apartment is very high, tasteful and comfortable. Very comfortable and large bed, huge roll top bath and a spacious kitchen (with all you'd want to get you going, tea, milk, coffee etc). The property is obviously located within the stunning Tissington Hall, and very close to the Tearooms which were great for lunch etc and well priced. Nothing seemed too much trouble for Sir Richard and in our two day stay we saw him doing just about every job imaginable around the estate, so we were very thankful that he still found 30 mins to show us around the main house, it is amazing and Sir Richard had a huge amount of knowledge on the house and the local area, along with the gardens I can't think of a better place to stay”

“Lovely spacious apartment in an excellent location. Sir Richard was very welcoming and we really enjoyed our stay. If I was ever in the area, I’d definitely book again.”

“Highly recommend & worth every penny. The Butlers Retreat was immaculate, stylish, homely and provided everything we needed. The whole estate is well kept and beautiful. Herberts Tearooms are well worth a try and all the little local shops too. Thank you to Sir Richard and his family for a lovely mini-break.”

“The very positive reviews from other guests are accurate- a lovely space to stay in, and quite a treat to be in such a lovely village. The village is charming at any time, but a stay at the Butler’s Retreat provides an opportunity to wander around the village (and the Hall’s gardens with permission if you are lucky) after everyone else has gone for the day.”

“We loved everything about the Butler's Retreat, a fabulous self-contained space within Tissington Hall. The apartment was spotlessly clean, and the owners provided a range of necessities (toiletries, milk, butter, bread, tea and coffee) to get us started. Sir Richard was on hand to show us around when we first arrived, and was happy to share local knowledge (walks and pubs) when we met in the grounds. It's a great location whether you plan to walk the local area (Tissington / High Peak trails are within easy reach) or want to explore the Peak District further. Overall a perfect experience which helped to make a birthday treat even more special. Thank you!”

“Tissington is a wonderful little village, quite the film set. Our stay at The Butlers Retreat at Tissington Hall was fantastic, the best BnB I've stayed at. The property is self contained and spotlessly clean with lots of nice touches like fresh flowers and breakfast set out in the kitchen. Sir Richard was the consummate very welcoming and charming. We will definitely be back.”

“Butler’s Retreat is a wonderful place to stay in an idyllic setting - luxurious touches throughout the apartment and beautiful views from every window.
Thank you again for taking the time to show us around today - it was very interesting to see the Hall, especially the piano and historic Decca Records! Butler’s Retreat was absolutely perfect for our stay and so comfortable with the baby. The apartment was beautifully decorated and had everything we needed”

“Butlers Retreat was the perfect hideaway that we wanted for our mini break in the Peaks. It is a stunning house, beautifully decorated and immaculately presented. The space was warm, cosy and comfortable with everything we needed. Sir Richard was a great host and always prompt with the communication when booking and ahead of our arrival. If we are in the area in the future we would definitely choose to stay here again”

“This apartment is outstanding in every way - quality of furnishings, comfort of the bed, stylish decor and immaculate cleanliness. A warm and helpful welcome from Elaine. We are sat at the Duncombe Arms as recommended by another visitor. The food, service and atmosphere were excellent there. A secluded haven and we would definately return as one night is just not enough as others have said.
A wonderful stay. We felt so comfortable and cosy in this outstanding accommodation and picturesque location. Size of apartment was exceptional. Thank you Sir Richard”

“Wow what a wonderful place to stay. We knew when we booked that it was going to be a nice experience, but our expectations were far exceeded. This is a really top class place to stay. Sir Richard was very welcoming and provided some wonderful tips for the local area. The place is very well decorated and clean, we wished we could have stayed a lot longer. The location is perfect, you can walk down the road to the tea rooms, couple incredible gastro pubs short drive away and everything the peak district has to offer is right on your door step. Don't hesitate to book. Just incredible
Thanks Sir Richard we had a wonderful stay. Wish we could have stayed longer!”

“Tissington is a hidden gem, a beautiful village in a picturesque countryside. Butlers retreat itself was beautifully decorated, a country house style but felt modern and light. A very comfortable bed and a lovely basic selection of breakfast foods, leaving milk was a nice touch! A lot of places to explore, both within the quaint village itself (a visit to the tea rooms and sweet shop are a must) but also the surrounding countryside, national parks, stately homes and towns. Lots of lovely pubs and restaurants, would highly recommend the duncombe arms, truly delicious food. A lovely break away!
We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay, and we adore your dogs! Thankyou so much for being such a wonderful host.” ”

“A great place to stay to relax and to explore the area. Sir Richard was very welcoming and we were able to visit the house and gardens which helped us appreciate the work the family are putting in to restore and maintain this beautiful estate.
Many thanks for your warm welcome and beautiful apartment. We had a wonderful relaxing break and will certainly recommend”

“A really lovely apartment in a very beautiful house and village. Tissington was great to wander around, the cafe just down the road was a bonus and the food good. Tissington Hall and gardens were amazing and there were walks from the door. The apartment was very clean and comfortable, all very neutral and stylish but with added quirky charm."

“This place is stunning. You stay within the park of the larger estate house in a totally private apartment suite that is as beautifully and thoughtfully appointed as anywhere I've ever stayed (grand hotels included). It's wonderful to have a space that includes a little kitchen and a little sitting room area, as well as the bathroom and bedroom. There were fixings for a continental breakfast in the kitchen. Everything is stunningly decorated, but in a really warm and inviting way. Because of our schedule, we didn't have the chance to meet Sir Richard or his wife, but he made arrangements for us to be shown to the apartment by a very kind woman from Herbert's Tea Room (which is a delightful place about a two minute walk from the suite, and where we made a stop before leaving town the next day—fantastic scones and cakes!). Everything felt absolutely luxurious, while also leaving you feeling totally authentically in the midst of this lovely tiny village. I only wish we had booked longer to spend at the Retreat and in this area more generally—it was a favorite part of this trip! We will surely be back."

“If you decide to book a stay at Tissington, you won't be disappointed! It has the perfect balance of relaxation and community spirit. I loved the range of different sites and businesses to explore. It is situated within a comfortable drive to both Ashbourne and Buxton. We stopped off at Bakewell on the way home too :-) Butlers Retreat itself is superb and refurbished to a very high standard. It was a fantastic mini break. ".

“We had the best experience staying at Butler's Retreat. Right from the the very start with the warm and enthusiastic welcome by our host Sir Richard FitzHerbert to the comfortable apartment in this historic home- this is one not to be missed. Sir Richard was generous with his time, proud to share his family's long history at Tissington and genuinely ensuring that you are made to feel welcome and comfortable staying in his family home. The buildings are glorious, the grounds and gardens serine and the village in enchanting. We had lunch and afternoon tea at Herbert's and highly recommend you this cafe. There are simply no negatives about this place and it's people. I encourage you to go and experience the quintessential English village. Only one regret - we didn't have more time to spend here".

“An amazing, clean and comfortable accommodation and surroundings away from the bustling city in a private village by itself that gave solace to us when we needed it most. Will highly recommend and will definitely return.
Thank you very much for providing us such a pleasant place to rest".

“We had a fabulous stay In the Butlers Suite, it was a real treat to stay somewhere so unique and special , only wish it had been for longer.
Tissington is a beautiful village and we will definitely be coming back with our friends and stay for longer next time.
Thank you for all recommendations regarding the pub and taxi, we eat at The George and food and service was fabulous.
It was a wonderful way to spend my birthday and I haven’t stopped talking about it”

“The Butler's Retreat is a gem in the Peak District. Staying here is an unique experience for our trip in England. Although we arrived in a dark foggy evening on a mid-winter day, Sir Richard came to our rescue instantly and put us into the warm and cozy apartment. The interior, as shown in the photos, is stylishly decorated with nostalgic items as well as modern amenities. The little village itself is very quite in winter, i will definitely consider visiting again in the future”

The Butlers Retreat is both beautiful and homely, we have been very comfortable and were provided with everything we needed.
Thank-you and we hope to be regular visitors if we can get in as we are sure you are going to be very busy.
P.S The Wifi was great which was a great help !”

“The only way our stay in Tissington could have been any better was if we had been able to stay longer (but we were en route to a wedding). The location was beautiful, the butler's retreat was delightfully restored with all the modern comforts you would want, and Sir Richard was very welcoming. He recommended a lovely little pub a short drive away where we were able to have a simple candlelit dinner before returning for a great night's sleep. Most definitely a relaxing get-away. We would highly recommend staying longer to explore the surroundings more thoroughly, and indeed hope to be able to do so ourselves in the future.”
Butlers Retreat Trip Advisor Client Review - August 2016
We were delighted with our stay in The Butler's Retreat suite, which is part of the old servants' quarters at Tissington Hall.
The elegantly decorated suite comprises a lovely, spaceous bedroom with sitting area and very comfortable bed; a nicely appointed bathroom with bath and shower, and a cosy kitchen, suitable for continental style breakfasting.
The Butler's Retreat is very peaceful, and feels a bit special!
Tissington is the most gorgeous little estate village, with beautiful stone cottages, church, duck pond, and wells which are dressed during the summer (unfortunately, we missed this).
There is Herbert's Tearooms, a trekking centre, candle-maker, butcher, etc, all in the village, harking back to when the estate would have been thriving with artisans and activity. There are some nice local pubs, notably The Old Dog where we had a decent burger style meal and very good beer.
Local small towns are Ashbourne and Bakewell and there are lots of opportunities for walks. We stayed over a wet weekend, but managed to venture about 10 miles along the Tissington Trail , a former railway line, now a flat pathway through some very pretty Peak District scenery. We took a bus back to Tissington from Hartington village: The Peak District is so beautiful, and much less congested than the Lakes. We certainly hope to return soon.
